BACKGROUND CONTEXT
CONCEPT
Motivated by the tragic circumstances in Madagascar's mica mines, our project aims to expose the stark contrast between the glamorous portrayal of mica powder in the fashion industry and the harsh exploitation behind its production. We're merging these two worlds in a poignant photoshoot to raise awareness about the hidden tragedies associated with mica mining. Our goal is to prompt a critical reflection on the ethical implications of the fashion industry's glorification of mica, advocating for responsible sourcing and ethical practices. Through this visual narrative, we strive to encourage a collective commitment to addressing the humanaly costs tied to the production of this seemingly luxurious material.

In look #1 we aimed to portray how we see the mica glitter in the industry today, glamorous and high fashion. Our child model has gold glitter eye shadow and a heartbreakingly numb expression to her face. She’s dressed maturely, in business wear to show her lack of childhood and forced need to grow up and work at such a young age.

For look #2 we put together a look that was inspired by the armuor used for warrior and knights. The heavy emphasis on metals and restrictive materials shows the children's inability to escape working within the mines, as well as their inability to breathe properly due to the mica powder they are inhaling. The model expresses her fear, danger and innocence.

Look #3 is our most extravagant, representing the main message of the shoot. The styling includes Elizabethan era inspired ornamentation, gold flakes, intricately woven beads and a luxurious satin skirt. This look features our main shot of the model sitting in a chair holding a news story regarding the mica mines with liquid gold fingertips. The mood and models expression is dark, disturbing and full of conflicting feelings of agony, anger and sadness.
